My first dedicated portrait session
After manifesting a portrait shoot for weeks, Norma and I just happened to be in the beautiful botanical gardens on a sunny day with the camera in the car. I managed to get some shots I was really proud of with the 45mm f1.2, which gave me incredible out of focus backgrounds.

Another thing that I was really appreciative of was the blossoms blooming here in Christchurch. It made the whole experience just a little lighter and more fun. Norma was also very gracious and patient as I learned how to pose her and played around with the settings on my camera.

One thing I will note is that shooting in the direct sunlight was a challenge because I stubbornly wanted to stick to 1.2, so I mostly kept us in the shade.

Next was the editing. I definitely think I went overboard with some of it, but I learned quite a lot as I went along. I first applied a simple grade to all of them. Lower highlights, raised shadows, etc. I then started tweaking the colors, subject, and background individually on some of the later edits. I can feel my comfort with DaVinci Resolve increasing (yes right now I’m refusing to use Adobe), and I’m enjoying the process more than I thought I would.

All in all, I’m very happy with what I produced here and so appreciative for every step of the experience.
